With great sadness we have to inform, that 19258, Moth Harry Bent of Admiral Halifax Shellhole, Sailed Away at 09H00 CAT on Saturday the 10th of October; after a long illness bravely borne.
A stalwart of the second generation, Moth Bent joined the Order at Admiral Halifax Shellhole during 1953 (67 years ago). He also served the Order of St John since 1943 and the SA Legion since 1946. He saw active service in the Pacific Theatre during World War II as a member of the Royal Navy, serving on frigates.
At Admiral Halifax Moth Bent served for more than 20 years as Paybill and for 17 years as Old Bill. As the serving Old Bill he was instrumental in securing premises for the Shellhole at the Rosedale Service Centre of the SA Legion Cape Town Branch; a venue still being utilised by the Shellhole. As a Legion member, Harry was known to recruit Veterans who had fallen on hard times off the street and assisted in securing pensions for them. He also served as an Honorary Life Member of the now defunct Ex-Woman’s Services League.
For his services to the cause of Mothdom, Harry received both the Certificate of Comradeship (1978) and the Certificate for Excellent Service (2013). When still applicable, Moth Bent also served as a dual Member at Marshal Smuts Shellhole.
He will missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him; rest in peace Brother Moth.
