The Memorable Order of Tin Hats has been involved in the Comrades since the inaugural race in 1921. Founded by Moth Vic Clapham, the Comrades Race was established as a living memorial to South African soldiers who died in World War I.
The MOTH was formed in 1927 by Moth Charles Evenden, affectionately known as ‘O’. His vision was for veterans to continue the tradition of trench comrade in civilian life and to remember those who paid the supreme sacrifice. Consequently, the MOTH and the Comrades share the same ideals.
In mid-2026, the MOTH was honoured as one of the eight beneficiaries of the Amabeadibeadi Charity for 2027. This year marks the 100th Comrades race and the 100th anniversary of the MOTH’s founding. It will be a significant and busy year for the MOTH, and we encourage all members to contribute to its success.
Events and activities for the Comrades race include:
- Applying to become a beneficiary. This action has been completed.
- Obtaining Comrades Runners who Race4Charity to nominate them to run for the MOTH. They will need to donate money to the MOTH, but we can assist by making donations to their charity.
- Raffling a Toyota. We expect every Shellhole to assist with the sale of these tickets, as there will be a direct return to the MOTH.
- Marketing the MOTH and selling memorabilia to runners and friends of the Comrades at the Start and End of the race. We have permission to use there logo below.
