Introduction

In May 2027 the Memorable Order of the Tin Hats will celebrate one hundred years of distinguished service to its members and their families.  A beacon and respected organization among Veterans.  To reach this milestone is an exceptional achievement for any organization.

The formation of the Order by Moth Evenden in May 1927 is well documented, a sound foundation based on three sound Ideals:

  • True Comradeship, this I believe is the social Ideal, the gathering of likeminded friends and comrades, both formal and informal occasions.
  • Mutual Help, the obvious practical Ideal.
  • Sound Memory, in this Ideal all Moth’s have a sacred duty to honour and remember our founder members, those who have since ‘answered the Sunset Call.’ Most of all, to keep the Names of our Fallen alive.  When we recite the last line of the Moth Prayer, “…we will Remember Them,” this must not only be chorus of words, but must expand into physical actions.  After all, someone has to Remember or to show that they remember.:

The Badge

Theme: The Order, founded by Moth O and veterans of the Great War, many of them broken and destitute and needing help to find their feet, council and, more than anything, to honour their fallen comrades.

The Angel: The appearance of angels to tired, near defeated troops on the Western Front –  truth, myth or just the imagination of desperate soldiers – brought hope and a determined will to succeed.  The angel, representing peace and victory, is depicted on the obverse of the Victory Medals of twenty two of the twenty four of the Allied countries.

The “MOTH 100” Centenary Pin

Description

In Gold, the Angel of Victory with outstretched wings, an Olive Branch grasped in her right hand, a symbol of Peace and True Comradeship in The Order and beyond.  An outstretched left hand symbolizing and offering Mutual Help.

At the Angels’ feet, The acronym of Memorable Order the Tin Hats (MOTH) surmounted by a Tin Hat and Lit and Rayed Candle, the principal emblem of the Order.

This Charge framed in a Closed Wreath as a Memorial to the Fallen and all those who have subsequently Answered the Sunset Call.  The Wreath of Laurel representing Achievement, and Oak symbolizing Strength and Perseverance.  Crested by the number “100”.

All superimposed on a disc of Silver and resting on an ornamental Ribbon, flanked on either side with the Years 1927 and 2027.  Inscribed with the Motto, “WE REMEMBER THEM.”   The word “Will” is deliberately omitted from the traditional motto, in order to illustrate that we in The Order have, over the Century, been true to our Pledge of Sound Memory.  We will continue to do so.

Yours in Comradeship
